A note for all the mama bears (and dads too) out there who dropped their kids off at school for another year

Woah… today our babies, who aren’t so little anymore walked back into school. The prep work, the emotions, the restless nights of laying awake, wondering how this year will be for them.. everything became real as we walked our kids into school this morning.

I don’t know about you but that first day back isn’t like any other day. It is happy, exhilarating, sad, draining, full of uncertainty and for some, downright challenging. And we can sense it. Deep down we have a knowing that it is new and hard and beautiful all at the same time.

New teacher. New classroom. New friends. New systems. New expectations.

I look down at my daughter and see tears well up in her eyes. I notice the grip get a bit stronger. I pull her in for a huge squeeze. She’s ready AND the uncertainty is overwhelming. She is brave and still so little. No matter how much prep work we do, it’s still hard. She wants to be here, yet it is hard. I ask her if she needs a moment in the hallway to gather her thoughts and she nods. Today is about her. We walk, we gather ourselves, we talk, we hug. She looks up at me with her huge brown eyes and tells me she is ready. I see it in her. That spunky girl is READY. The bell rings. The grip softens. We hug so hard that we both giggle a bit. She is ok. I am ok. We are ok.

Mama, YOU are her world. YOU did great. All is well. All transitions take time. Regulate. Take a breathe. All will be well.
